Meet the Permanent Residents of Port Orchard Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary

We’re thrilled to introduce a brand-new section of our website dedicated to the heart and soul of Port Orchard Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary: our Sanctuary Birds. These are the birds who, for one reason or another, will spend the rest of their lives in our care—safe, loved, and never again at risk of neglect, abandonment, or rehoming.

You can now explore their stories at sanctuary.poparrots.com.

Each profile shines a light on the unique personalities, histories, and needs of these permanent residents—some funny, some heartbreaking, and all worth knowing. Whether you’ve visited them in person or are just discovering them for the first time, this space brings you closer to the incredible birds who call our sanctuary home.

Meet the Flock

From the chatty to the fiercely independent, our sanctuary residents come from all walks of life:

  • Zaire – A charismatic Congo African Grey with a sharp wit and sharper opinions.
  • Africa – Another Congo African Grey who prefers quiet observation to interaction, but whose presence is deeply felt.
  • Atlas – A massive and majestic Hyacinth Macaw who commands attention without needing to say a word.
  • Buttercup – A vibrant Sun Conure bursting with energy and sass, never shy about sharing her feelings.
  • Kiwi – Another lively Sun Conure, often seen playing or snuggling up with Buttercup, his closest companion.
  • Lucy and Maui – Our bonded macaw pair, a Greenwing and a Blue and Gold, who found love and healing together after very different beginnings.
  • Red and O.G. – A Scarlet and a Catalina Macaw with no love left for humans, but an unshakable loyalty to each other.
  • Simba – A third Congo African Grey with a gentle presence and keen intelligence.

Each of these birds has a home for life with us—whether due to medical needs, behavioral challenges, or a deep preference to be left alone by people. They are not up for adoption, but their stories matter deeply, and we invite you to get to know them better.

Why This Section Matters

So many birds in rescue face an uncertain future. Our sanctuary residents are the ones who can finally stop worrying about what comes next. They’ve been through instability, trauma, and rejection. Here, they receive the care, patience, and respect they need—on their own terms.

We created this space not only to honor their journeys but also to deepen the connection between our community and the birds you help us care for. These are not just animals in cages. They are complex, intelligent, emotional beings with pasts and preferences—and now, a safe future.

Join Us in Supporting Their Sanctuary

If you’ve had a moment with any of these birds—whether a conversation with Lucy, a nod from Zaire, or even just an awed pause outside Red and O.G.’s cage—we’d love to hear about it. Leave a comment below to share your experience and help others appreciate just how special these birds are.

Don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter for updates on their lives, behind-the-scenes moments, and ways to get involved.

And if you believe, like we do, that every bird deserves safety, dignity, and love, please consider donating to support the ongoing care of Zaire, Africa, Atlas, Buttercup, Kiwi, Lucy, Maui, Red, O.G., Simba—and the many others who still need us. Every dollar helps us provide food, enrichment, medical care, and the sanctuary they depend on.

🦜❤️ Thank you for standing with us, and for standing with them.
