Earlier today, Port Orchard Parrot Rescue & Sanctuary welcomed a very special new resident named Sammy, a 29 year old male Senegal parrot whose life has been defined by stability, routine, and long term companionship.
Sammy has spent his entire life with the same family, which is something we rarely see in rescue. Due to illness, his former owner is no longer able to care for him in the way she wants and deserves. This was clearly a difficult and loving decision, made with Sammy’s well being at heart. He has been cherished throughout his life, and that care shows.
In earlier years, Sammy was known to be quite vocal and expressive. As he has gotten older, he has become much quieter, settling into the calmer pace that often comes with senior parrots. At 29, Sammy is very much in his later years, and anyone considering adoption or fostering should do so with that in mind. Senegal parrots often live into their 30s and sometimes beyond when provided with attentive, thoughtful care.
Sammy will do best with someone who understands that senior parrots often:
- Move a bit more slowly
- Vocalize less, or differently, than they once did
- Thrive on routine, patience, and gentle companionship
What senior parrots offer in return is something special. They bring depth, presence, and a quiet kind of trust that only comes from a lifetime spent alongside humans.
Sammy is available for adoption or fostering immediately. Whether you are able to offer him a permanent home or a safe, loving place to land for this stage of his life, you would be giving him something truly meaningful. Comfort, stability, and dignity when it matters most.
If you feel you may be the right fit for Sammy, or if you would like to learn more about fostering a senior parrot, please reach out. Some of the most important bonds are formed later in life.
